Week 9

Last week, we sent our final draft of our choreography to our teacher in order to get feedback in which we could apply to in this lesson. Our feedback consisted of:

- During the PTSD section, use more facial expression so our message  can be shown to the audience clearly.

- When we are in a line and bring the sticks over our head, step behind the line of sticks before coming forward into the war section as if we are crossing the trenches.

- Go over timing at the end of out choreography to ensure its neat and there's a clear different between our canons and unisons

- At the end make it more suspenseful and effective for instance finding the percentage of soldiers that don't make it home and use the kneel to indicate this.

- Check how we technically do the marching motif as some people are doing it slightly differently making it look unclear.

With these corrections in mind we went from the beginning of our performance and applied each correction. Our biggest change was the ending as we have 4/6 people slowly drop to the floor to show them not making it home. I feel although this created a shock of reality for the audience which allowed them to empathise with the soldiers at War. The other two remaining soldiers slowly stand up in shock as they look around the their team who are no longer with them. Im really happy with how this turned out as it gives the audience time to understand the reality of War which was our main target when we first started choreographing this piece.

Later in the week we performed our choreography to our class for the first time and this is the feedback we received:

- We used our facial expressions well allowing the audience to clearly know how we were feeling.

- We conveyed our stimulus well.

- Good contrast in music, with each different track complimenting each section well.

- Make sure our straight lines are straight as it will polish our choreography.

Reflecting on this, next lesson we will closely evaluate how big to take our steps to ensure our lines are as straight as possible. Overall I feel although this week has been very productive as we were able to perform it to a live audience allowing us to see how the audience will react to our piece to ensure we got the correct message across, in which I feel like we did effectively using one girl who cried at the end of our piece as an example.

  1. I really enjoyed watching your pieces and hearing how moving forward you will apply the feedback. How did you find performing your piece all the way through? And how did you feel about the feedback you received?

    1. Thank you for your comment Megan, I really loved performing our choreography all the way through as it now feels like one whole dance piece where before it felt rigid and separated. I feel although our feedback was really useful and will allow us to clean up our choreography making it look sharp and professional.

  2. I enjoyed reading from your perspective of our group performance. As well as work on correcting from your feedback, what else do you plan to do to prepare for the performance?

    1. Thank you for your comment Eloisa, I feel although now we need to clean and repeat any sections maybe we are not as confident on to ensure out performance can be performed to the best standard. We can do this by using next weeks lesson to look over counts and choreography we feel unsure on.

  3. This is a really good blog. You have carried a clear structure throughout making it easier for the reader to follow through. I enjoyed watching your final piece and I feel it has come together really well , presenting your stimulus throughout. I love how much emotion yourself and the other dancers show when dancing as I feel it really allows the audience to connect with your characters, it also leaves your audience feeling emotional thinking of those who served for our country. Now how will your prepare your piece for the assessment ? are there any changes you need to make?

    1. Thank you for your comment Bella, I think they best way for us to prepare for our assessment is by going over any mistakes us individuals made during rehearsal to ensure our performance is as perfect as possible. During the last week we have modified the section where our sticks are involved as a way to make it more intricate and dynamic. Im happy with the changes we made as it now looks more impactful and complexed.
