Week 7

Reflecting on this weeks choreography lesson, we focused on moving onto the second section of our choreography which expresses the idea of teamwork.

However firstly, we decided as a group it would be a good idea to use the first half of the lesson to find music for our whole piece. Due to us including 7 different sections of choreography, we had to find 7 different pieces of music. I really enjoyed this process as we were all able to express our ideas and thoughts through the music we chose and discuss them as a team. I really enjoyed hearing my groups thoughts and interpretations of each section and how we all took each others ideas into consideration.

Heres the different tracks we will be using for our choreography:

section 1 - March - Metronome

Section 2 - Teamwork - Vivaldi, The Four Seasons; Spring One, Max Richter

Section 3 - Countdown - 1976 by Hans Zimmer

Section 4 - Chaos - Halo by Martain O'Donnell

Section 5 - Dona Nobis by Max Richter

Section 6 - PTSD - moonlight Sonata by Auther White

Section 7 - Respect - The Last Post by Band of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery

Now we have our music, we started to create our choreography for our second section. We started by using mine and Erins motif from week three as it has repetitive unison to demonstrate the idea of us working together. As the lesson progressed we decided we wanted to interact with each other in a fun and playful way to really express the individuality of each soldier and how they are regular people sacrificing their lives. We did this by adding conversations, laughter and small interactions, I feel although this allows the audience to build a bond with us as dancers and allows them to also have a more emotional impact later in our choreography.

Moving on, we then had to show what we had created that lesson to the class allowing our peers to give us points of improvement. I loved being able to perform to an audience and seeing how they reacted to the piece. It then allows us to examine faults and highlights within our choreography. By the end of our piece we was able to make one of our peer members cry which I felt was a big breakthrough with our choreography as the emotive side was something we really wanted to get across to the audience, however we were also told that there should be more acting within our piece. Taking this on board, we are going to include more interactions in all sections of our choreography.

Finally, we looked at our PTSD section, we thought it would be a good idea for us to improvise to the music as we felt although we would really be able to express our individuality and emotive feelings. This has been my favourite part of our choreography so far as it just allowed our body to move in ways we could express the idea of trauma and guilt. When doing my improvisation I reflected back to Travis Williams who was my person of research. This really helped my movement as I was inspired by his story and the pain he had to go through.

Overall, this week has been very productive and I am excited to start the choreography for section 3 and 4 next week.

  1. This is an excellent blog , containing lots of detail and a clear structure. I really like how you have 7 sections within your choreography in which you have decided to find several contrasting pieces of music for each section, I feel this will look very effective. I really enjoyed watching your piece this lesson as you can clearly see how your movement links to your stimulus, I also found it emotive and beautiful to watch.
Did you face any challenges during this task?

    1. Thank you for your comment Rosabella, for me personally the biggest challenge this week was finding mature ways to express the playfulness in the teamwork section as well as expressing the idea of teamwork to the audience. We overcome this by adding small yet affective movements to the choreography such as high-fives to clearly get our message across.

    1. Thank you for your comment Eloisa, I would say my personal priorities now are finishing our 10 minute choreography piece so that we have 2 week to perfect and clean it. I will do this by arranging extra practice throughout the week and videoing it to see where we can improve and perfect it.

  3. This is a very detailed blog and you explained this weeks lesson really well, I like how you have included your feedback and how your going to apply this within your choreography, have you used any choreographic devices in your piece? If so which ones?

    1. Thank you for your comment Megan. Yes, as we have been choreographing we have been ticking off choreographic devices as a way to develop our movements as much as possible. So far we have used, unison, repetition, canon, accumulation, and slow motion.
