Choreographic Inspirations
This blog will explain all the practitioners that inspired our choreography movement and how we used their artistic styles and choreographic technique within our piece.
'Sutra':
Our main focus point when using Sutra as inspiration was how they used their sticks productively instead of using them as decoration. In our piece we use the sticks to illustrate guns. When watching 'Sutra' we saw how they utilised their sticks to create sound within their piece, we felt although this created layers and texture musically so we included this idea into out choreography. We added this idea by hitting the sticks on the floor and hitting the sticks together to create loud 'bangs' which we felt also illustrated the sound of guns. At first it was challenging to choreograph with the sticks as we didn't know how to use them in a productive and meaningful way, however after watching "Sutra" and experimenting with our own ideas we were able to come up with really intricate and unique movements.
BalletBoyz:
BalletBoyz was our biggest choreographic inspiration for our war section as they really know how to use movement to express emotion to tell a story. We looked specifically at their 'Young Men' trailer in which shows raw emotion allowing the dancer to really express their thoughts and feelings towards the reality of War. They also include diaries and loved ones within this trailer. We were inspired by this and decided to add in the humanity with our choreography, we did this by a few individuals casting their emotions to the audience while the rest of the group lean away from them during the countdown section. An example of one of the gestures we did was Nathan pulling out a photo of a loved one slowly before kissing it and putting it back into his pocket. This show to the audience the individuality and realisation of each solider and how they might not make it back home.

This is a detailed blog and I really enjoyed reading about how your chosen practitioners have inspired your piece. You spoke about how you found choreographing with sticks challenging at first, have you faced any more challenges when choreographing. If so how did you overcome these?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Megan, I wouldn't say we faced any challenges however I feel although the stick section , if not done together, can look unclean and unprofessional. So to overcome this, in next weeks lesson, we as a group will go over timing, heights and dynamics in which we are moving the sticks to ensure out choreography is the best it can be.
DeleteThis is a great blog Lucy and I really enjoyed reading it hearing about the different works that helped inspire your piece. I like how you have incorporated the use of the sticks within your dance symbolising guns as I feel this really adds to your piece in a very effective way. How would you compare these two practitioners ? would you say there work is different or similar?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Bella, I would personally say that our two practitioners are technically contrasted through the use of different dynamics and Styles. Sutra is very aggressive with big and highly impressive jumps where as BalletBoyz use more acting in there piece as well as grounded movements.
DeleteThis is a really interesting perspective on our chosen choreographic influences. Which of these practitioners was the most effective influence on our group piece?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Ella, I personally think BalletBoyz had the biggest impact on our piece as we had the same storyline and intention behind our movement as they did, so we were able to use their movements as inspiration throughout our choreography.
