Week 3
Moving into week 3, as a class we looked into the translation method in order to create choreography.
We started this class by separating into small groups of threes and standing in a straight line with the second and third girls facing the back and the first girl facing the front. Girl number one then got assigned a word from the teacher in which she then had to create a short phrase of movement to correlate that word. Then the second girl turned around and watched the first girl do her phrase twice. Similarly, the third girl then turned around and watched the second girl repeat the phrase once. The third girl then had to repeat the phrase and show the group what she could remember. Then we repeated this process 4 times.
The words we were given were:
itching
falling
protection
overflowing
What was interesting about this method was how different the original phrase was in comparison to the final phrase from the third girl. I found it very difficult to remember the phrase after only seeing it once however I used the movements I could remember in order to create something similar.
After we had finished our fourth word, we then put all the phrases together ( the original phrases and the reconstructed phrases) to create a small section of choreography. This gave us moments of repetition and a link of movement throughout the piece which was my favourite aspect from this technique. Then our teacher made us look into adding choreographic techniques to further develop our phrase. From the help of last year, we was able to incorporate canon, unison, reverse and fragmentation. We also looked at patterns/ positions of ourselves and used lines and triangles throughout our sequence.
Overall, this has been my favourite choreographic method as it allowed us to easily come up with phrases which all linked allowing the choreography to flow. The addition of choreographic devices also helped reconstruct the piece and make it look more advanced and developed. I will definitely be using this technique when we get onto our group choreography.
I like how in this blog you have added your opinion on the task as well as adding what you found challenging and what you enjoyed. I also like how you added the video of your final piece for better understanding of what the original and new motif was. You spoke about adding choreographic devices into your piece, how did you find adding the choreographic devices into your piece?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Megan. Actually adding the choreographic devices into our choreography was my favourite part of the lesson as its a really good way to enhance and develop your choreography. I loved seeing how adding choreographic devices can change a simple section of choreography into something intricate and unique.
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this blog and watching your final piece of choreography.
ReplyDeleteYou have explained the task in detail describing the challenges you faced as well as your own thoughts and opinions of this particular method. Did you find linking all of the different phrases together easy or a challenge? if so how did you overcome this?
Thank you for your comment Bella, luckily our movements flowed well together, not making this the most challenging part of the process. I would say my challenge was trying to remember the phrase from the precious girl after only seeing the phrase done once.
DeleteAs I was in your group I enjoyed reading about your experience of the task. I also enjoyed the additions of the choreographic devices. As you have mentioned that you would like to use this technique in your group piece, how do you feel it would work in a bigger group? Do you think it could add more challenge?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Eloisa. Yes I definitely think this method will be more challenging with double the amount of people however, I feel although it will enable us to create original motifs making the choreography personal and unique. This will then allow us to perform our choreography with raw emotion as we will have more of a emotional attachment to the movement.
