Week 2

In todays lesson, we looked at the Chance Method as a way to develop our choreography.

We did this by separating ourselves into small groups and between us choosing one item - whether it be a household object, a piece of music or a photo- to use as our stimulus.  Me and my group decided to bring in a fake plant as we noticed many different sectors of the plant in which we could interpret into our choreography, for example how the branches fell from the centre of the plant and the distinct lines/ patterns in each individual leaf.

From here, like last week, we rotated in our group and annotated any ideas/words we thought linked to other groups item. Again we had 3 minutes on each item. As a group we really enjoyed seeing everyones ideas and annotations around our plant as it sparked ideas we hadn't thought off.

Subsequently, we circled 3 word from our plant mind map in which we wanted to created movement too. As a group we chose trust, individuality and routed. We then had to create 4 different movements for each word and number them 1-12. Our teacher then used a random generator to create a sequence which went:

1...11...6...1...8...9...6...2...10...5...12...7...10...3...4...

As a group, we then had to piece all our different movements into a sequence. I really liked this part of the lesson as it allowed me and my group to find new transitions in order to make the sequence flow, which was very challenging. Once we had our sequence our teacher then made us pick a number between 1-4, with each number relating to a different piece of music. As a group we chose the number 1, which left us with this piece of music:

Overall I really liked this choreographic technique as it allowed us to easily create a sequence of movement which was also easily related to our stimulus. I was definitely be cooperating the Chance Method when created our group piece.

Here in this photo you will see our three selected words with our movement numbered:

  1. You have structured this post really well so that it is clear to see how this lesson developed from an image/object, into a piece of choreography and the images that you have included of your notes are really useful to see your process. Was it challenging to be randomly assigned music and did you have to change the dynamic or intention behind your movement in order to fit to the music?

    1. Thank you for your comment Daisy, Yes the random assigned music did change the dynamic of our piece due to it having very staccato beat, making our movements sharper with more dynamics. I personally feel like this made our choreography more interesting as it allowed contrast and versatility.

  2. You have structured this blog really well and it is clear what all the tasks were throughout the lesson, I like how you have used images as well as videos for a better understanding. You spoke about how you enjoyed seeing what the other groups ideas were, was there any of their words they stood out in particular?

    1. Thank you for your comment Megan, the three words, "trusted, individuality and routed' were the words that stood out between everyone in my group, however the words interwind and overflowing stood out to me individually. I think it is interesting how some words capture people attention more than others.

  3. This is a well written blog and i like how you have included a video of your final piece as well as photos of your written work as it really gives the reader a better understanding. Why were you drawn to the three words trust, individuality and routed in particular?

    1. Thank you for your comment Bella, trust, individuality and routed really stood out to us as a team as they were words we felt most passionate to and the words we had the most ideas about allowing the choreography process to be easier.

  4. I really like how you structured this blog post. What was the most challanging part of this exercise for you and how did you overcome it?

    1. Thank you for your comment Eloisa, for me personally the most challenging part of the task was linking the phrase together after the movements had been rearranged. By the use of my peers and the use of choreographic devices such as canon, I was able to overcome this.
